A fast week has passed by at Penn Museum Summer Camp! The day started off with an exciting scavenger hunt. The campers went to every gallery to find the object with given clues. Campers were quick and pensive to find the artifacts to complete the scavenger hunt before other groups! Congratulations to the yellow group for the win!

In the middle of the day, campers competed in their last Gaga game of the week, and it was a very heated and competitive game!

The day ended with the successful showcase, and it was a FULL house of family, friends, and campers! Different exhibit booths were set up, including: scarification booth, a makeup booth, a jewelry booth, and a large drawing of a Mayan princess. All of this combined together made a great showcase, displaying all that the campers learned this week, Worn and Adorn.

As always, it has been another full day of games, crafts, and learning at Penn Museum!

Today, the blue and green groups created amulets, like the eye of Horos, scarabs, and other Egyptian-themed amulets. Campers sculpted Model Magic clay into the shape that they desired, and later painted them to replicate the amulets. The red and yellow groups traveled to the Native American gallery to sketch different clothing that the native people wore, fitting perfectly in the theme of the week, Worn and Adorn. Campers learned that the special clothing were made from natural resources, like animal skin, plant materials, straw, and other fabric.

In addition to crafts, the children had an option of watching the world renown FIFA World Cup during lunch time. Although they did not see the end, it was a disappointment to hear about the loss to Germany.

The campers are eager, finishing the last touches for the show tomorrow, open to all families and friends! Please join us tomorrow, as we present all that we made/learn this week with the theme of Worn and Adorn!

To end this busy day, counselors, volunteers, and campers played several exciting games of Gaga: the perfect end to a great day.

A Day Behind the Scenes!

25 Jun

It was another fun day at Penn Museum Summer Camp! As always, campers participated in interesting, fun crafts in preparation for the performance on Friday! Although details for the show are a surprise, campers are eager to present their creative creations to family and friends. In addition to crafts, one of the highlights of the day included a “Behind the Scenes” presentation from several employees here at Penn Museum. In the presentation, the presenters showed the campers precious, old artifacts from places all over the world, including Alaska, North Dakota (from Native Americans), New Guinea, Democratic Republic of Congo, Panama, and Africa! This presentation was especially unique for the children, because this opportunity is not available for the public at Penn Museum. What a treat! Some pieces included jewelry, hats, and clothing, which fit in perfectly with the theme of the week, Worn and Adorn. As the week goes on, campers are learning that the tattoos, jewelry, and other pieces that native people wore were essential to defining who they were, and what culture they belonged to.

Playing Gaga!

24 Jun

The highlight of today’s activities was, undeniably Gaga, the well-known, fun game that is a fun tradition, played every week with campers and counselors together. The exciting game is like dodge-ball, but the ball stays on the ground, and the ball is hit with the forearm. When you’re hit, you’re out! Last one standing is champion! Some winners included Ellen and Grace! Congrats ladies! Our campers left the courtyard excited to play more in the near future! Campers are also in the process of preparing for the entertaining show on Friday for family. All are welcome!P1060739

Red and Yellow Group Make Masks

23 Jun

P1060678Welcome to Penn Museum Camp! On the very first exciting day, the yellow and red group had fun making African-themed masks. They learned about African jewelry, scars, and tattoos, which defined the native African people’s culture. The campers learned how these accessories defined who these people were, along with their culture. After much cutting, gluing, and taping, the campers were successful in creating these unique masks. Later in the week, the children will paint/color the masks. What a great start to the summer!
